3 Musts for New Runners
- How to enjoy running
- * Common mistakes and more…
As we approach the lighter nights, more runners begin to emerge on the streets – some who are entirely new to it.
RYPT has really been concentrating on running the past couple of weeks with Facebook, articles and blogs all targeting it. Warmer weather means it’s more tempting to get outdoors and I do love it.
Starting anything can be daunting but here are my top tips for beginning running outdoors.
As I’m sure you’ll appreciate it’s a far different proposition to running on the treadmill with the safety of the gym.
However, that is also part of it’s lure: the freedom.
Running does seem a simple concept: use your legs and move faster. However, one of the real skills is learning to pace yourself!
Through the numerous running clubs that I’ve run over the years, starting too fast is the most common error. Even if running feels good after five minutes, that can change pretty quickly if you’re not conditioned. Always be cautious and plan your route in advance – working up to a full sprint by the end is definitely more advisable.
Equipment
Ok, so you may be at the stage where you’ve still to decide if you’ll take up running long term but wearing the wrong shoes will not assist you in any way.
Wearing correct shoes with enough arch and support will help bones and joints (besides preventing blisters) so choose wisely!
Comfortable running gear: like a lightweight jacket is advisable. Trailing around in heavy gear which feels heavier after rainfall is a nightmare. Besides, good quality clothing is not expensive!
Most importantly, enjoy the process! Personally I would always listen to music and running has given me great memories over the years. It won’t always be in lovely weather or easy but it will always be worth it.
Do what you love. I appreciate that running may not be for everyone but if you enjoy it you will be rewarded.
Once you get to the point where you wish to improve your running, it’s important to remember that a solid gym plan will help you get results.
Contrary to popular belief, lifting weights will not make you bulky or heavier! In fact, a well rounded gym plan consisting of deadlifts, squats and so forth will improve your endurance running and strength.
These movements are not just for bodybuilders either they are fantastic for improving overall strength and muscular efficiency which is perfect for running.
Getting the correct technique is pivotal and that’s why the RYPT app has videos as part of every package. What’s more, with packages for the price of one personal training session, you’d be mad to miss it!
Day 23 of the RYPT running tip of the day is coming up. Head over to Facebook and like the page for more.
