Avoid a Training Plateau
- Tips for better training
- Make your fitness enjoyable
The thought of going for a run, to the gym or whatever kind of training you do can be off-putting. Even to the most ardent athlete, there are days when training is a struggle.
In essence, this comes down to multiple factors like fatigue, lacking time, being hungry or even just not seeing the point.
From my experience, this comes when you don't see the results for the effort that you put in. When you're training hard, eating well and making sacrifices, yet still not seeing results, this is one of the most demoralising things.
I have just begun to really increase the intensity of my training. For too long I've been cruising in the gym with my training.
Recently, having trained with a friend and I've noticed a huge leap in power lifting and cardio performance. This comes from a mixture of having someone to spot the heavier weights and also motivation. The workout routine was slightly different in that we had a boxing session at the end of the workout.
The result was lifting heavier weights (personal bests) and feeling more muscle fatigue the next day. exactly what I had been missing. Since then I have really kicked my training up a notch I'm beginning to feel and notice a considerable difference.
At the end of the day, there will be days when training is difficult due to the amount of hours that are required to be put in. This is a simple fact and sometimes motivation will be low. However having an end goal will significantly help with your mentality. See previous RYPT blogs on setting goals for more on this.
Regularly monitoring your fitness goals will provide you with the kind of feedback that will allow you to not only see your progression but also so provide the impetus for you to train harder.
It is fair enough to set a long term goal for where you wish to be in regards to weight loss or muscle gain etc but focusing on your short-term progress is vital. As always, I recommend ditching the scales and focusing instead on muscle mass and body fat percentage. Employ a tape measure rather than weighing scales, not only will this significantly help with your mental outlook but it will be less likely to provide feedback that will be detrimental to you in the longer run.
Having a training partner or a consistent training plan will make a significant difference to your own results. Sometimes you need to be pushed out of your comfort zone to achieve your potential. This is definitely true whether it's cardiovascular exercise, weightlifting or endurance and I would definitely recommend it.
