Balanced training
* Tales from 365 days of workouts
* Finding a routine

As much as lockdown has made many things difficult, for me, motivation has not been an issue. I have thrived with having a routine that revolves around exercise.
Admittedly, I tend to avoid gloating and self congratulation in my blogs (as I know first hand how tough fitness can be) but I have been fortunate here.

One of the very few positives of not being able to leave the house has been an inability to escape my daily fitness routine. I have ramped it up since lockdown one as there wasn't much else to do.

It only dawned on me the other day that it's a full calendar year that I've trained daily. It wasn't or a lack of tired, hungover and sometimes apathetic mornings but I found a way in the end. Usually my main excuses for not training are being away from home, lack of time or the usual hectic lifestyle. Lockdown has meant that it's been inescapable.

That being said, I still feel it's been an achievement from training shoulders on Christmas morning to a run on New year's day to a circuit training in the sun on my birthday. All of that was achieved with having a little puppy who regularly needed walked.

There is one secret, however and it boils down to balance. I will admit that it's nearing overkill now but rest and sleep are vital. I also appreciate that I need to stretch more and reduce my sugar intake. My nutrition at the moment seems to be high in carbohydrates as I'm aiming to gain weight but that will need to be reviewed.

Balance also revolves around a conscious effort not to overtrain certain body parts, especially when resistance training. If you follow my blogs you'll know that my format is (and had been):

Monday: chest and arms workout
Tuesday back and arms workout
Wednesday: leg workout
Thursday: abdominal training
Friday: shoulder workout
Saturday: 60 minute run
Sunday: legs and abdominal circuit

This way, my body theoretically should have enough time between sessions to recover. Admittedly it is a high end training plan and I wouldn't advocate it for beginners but once you're accustomed and motivated it becomes easier.
