Being a Beginner (Again)
Being a Beginner (Again)
- Tales of being back to the gym
- How to train smarter

So last week, I finally broke my abstinence from the gym. From 23rd March 2020 until December, it’s the longest I’ve gone without a gym membership since I was 18. Amazingly, my preliminary findings suggest that I have retained the majority of my strength (minus heavy compound movements like squats).
I was tempted into joining again after I saw a well known gym chain opening here. Having worked with this franchise elsewhere, it being 24 hours and one of the best I’ve experienced, I felt it was time.
It would be a lie to say that I didn’t feel nerves; with a mixture of new covid protocols and a change of environment. However, after three sessions, I felt fully at home. The main advice I would suggest is to have a rough plan. Even if the gym is busy then you will have a backup plan. Obviously it helps with the fact I have a decade of experience in the fitness industry but the fundamentals are the same.

My advice would always be to seek guidance on equipment that you are unsure of. Should be unfamiliar with the equipment, seek a fitness professional or consult the instructions (if it’s a machine). The gym I have joined certainly has more equipment than I’m used to and despite my experience, even I am humble enough to admit that I don’t recognise them all.
Overall, the social experience is definitely something that I have missed and I hope we are not about to enter another lockdown! In short, don’t be afraid to try the gym as I can assure you it’s cheaper than a home gym and if done right, you’ll have accountability, ensuring success!
