Creating The Habit
* Making fitness last
* Achieving sustainable results
We have officially passed the week where, statistically, most people have quit on their New Year's Resolution. How did you fare? Perhaps you're still powering on and don't need extra motivation? However, I suspect that most of us can use it.
In essence, fitness should be easy; exercise and repeat. However, between the ears is where most of us struggle. The thought of repetition can be straining, especially in today’s life where entertainment is all around us. As you will have noticed if you follow my blogs, I am a big advocate of enjoyment. This truly is the easiest path of success, besides there really is no need to do exercises that you hate.
As with creating any habit, it’s 50% discipline and 50% mentality. There are certainly times when it can be a struggle and you need to push through. On the whole, if you begin a fitness plan that is fun and engaging (subjective of course) then you are more likely to succeed. Performing a plan that is based on a template or copied from the internet isn’t guaranteed to work. My advice would be to either gain knowledge to subvert boredom or use the services of a fitness professional (even with a free basic gym induction).
There is a reason that I focus on the beginning, partly because i specialise in it and also due to the fact that it is most important phase. Failure to get it right, like being scolded, will warm you off trying again!
The next phase is relatively straightforward; noticing your progress. Once you see that you have lost weight / gained muscle / ran faster or further etc then it does become more addictive. Indeed I have found fitness to be a by-product of improving my mental outlook. During lockdown last year it was essential to giving me purpose, clarity and some enjoyment on days which were monotonous. It is not something that can be explained through literature, rather something that needs to be experienced in order to understand how powerful it really is.
