Workouts can get monotonous quickly unless you have a long term training plan.
One of the ways that I love to vary my training is to include superset training. There are numerous reasons for this being a staple in my training plan.
Supersets are simply put, two exercises performed back to back for a variety of reasons.
It allows you to train the muscles beyond their natural capacity by changing the exercise
Workouts are more time efficient. Two exercises then rest
More variation through a need for more exercises
A more cardiovascular intense workout by keeping your heart rate up.
The workouts can be more difficult but you will certainly achieve more. The main incentive is burning more body fat whilst you workout. The incorporation of cardio and weight training is a huge bonus,
The options are endless. For example, Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) workouts involve an upper body exercise followed immediately by a lower body exercise spiking the heart rate even more. Alternatively, two exercises on the same muscle group mean that you can fatigue the muscles faster and build lean muscle.
Furthermore, there can be a variation of repetitions for different goals. Higher repetitions mean that you can focus on stamina, endurance and burning calories. Lower repetitions are designed for increased muscle mass as part of a rounded training plan.
As you can see, rather than a linear and traditional plan, supersets allow you to train smarter and get quicker results. As recommended, periodisation is a crucial component of a training regime. Refreshing your plan every 6-8 weeks and monitoring progress is the best way to get results.
I would say that supersets are an underutilised weapon in the arsenal of fitness plans. The reasons above mean that progress is a lot faster and more concentrated.
