Gym Plans Explained: Bulking

  • Gym terminology debunked
  • * How many SETS should YOU be doing in the gym?

I appreciate that getting fit can be an alien concept and that there are lots of terms maybe unheard of.

If you read my recent blogs you’ll know that I hate gym myths that are perpetuated.

“Bulking” is a more advanced concept based around constructive weight gain (and particularly muscle).

It’s normally a loosely defined process that involves gaining strength and muscle mass but is open to interpretation.

For some people it means a completely different thing to others.

Bulking is based around an intensive lifting plan which normally involves lower repetitions and longer rest periods (to facilitate heavier lifts). It ultimately depends on the individual as there no hard and fast rule as to how quickly people gain muscle.

“Bulking” is one of the main reasons why people fear lifting weights: for getting “too bulky” which invariably will never happen to beginners!

The main aspect of bulking which leads to weight gain is the excessive calorie consumption and in some cases, forced intake of extra food. Not only that this lead to an unhealthy attitude towards food but it is not sustainable over the longer term.

You would be looking at creating meals around calorie content in order to gain size. This would involve boosting meals with rice, extra protein or other sources (not always the healthiest as the order of the day is quantity).

This whole concept is much detached from everything that I teach beginners and to be honest, I wouldn’t really teach people to “bulk” per se as it’s not my target audience. From the ground up, I specialise in beginner to intermediate fitness levels.

As you can see, structured exercise with rest and a personalised design is the best way to get results.
