Gym Plans Explained: Periodisation Planning
- Gym terminology debunked
- Nutritional / Training concepts examined
I appreciate that getting fit can be an alien concept and that there are lots of terms maybe unheard of.
If you read my recent blogs you’ll know that I hate gym myths that are perpetuated.
Part 3: Periodisation
This is a term that is fundamental to your fitness success. In short, it is changing your nutritional or fitness plan at a regular frequency to ensure success.
The whole idea is about overcoming your muscles ability to adapt over time and bluffing them into improving your performance, strength, endurance or whatever it is that you train for.
The optimal time for a training / nutritional plan should be around 6 to 8 weeks. Changing too frequently, or worse not enough, will seriously inhibit your ability to improve.
Regardless of whether it is cardiovascular exercise or resistance training, your plan should be reviewed and adapted on a regular basis. If it is not working, then it should be changed and if it is working then you should look to advance/progress to the next level.
At the end of the day, you will know best if your training plan is working. If you are feeling the muscles in question on the following day (or days) after then you know that the plan is effective. However, if you are not feeling the results of your training then it is time to devise a new plan.
After all, who wants to waste time in the gym or doing cardiovascular exercise when you could spend less time and get better results?
That is why, at RYPT I review all my clients plans on a frequent basis. The beautiful thing about online coaching is that I can see the EXACT training plan from the weights they have logged, to the amount of repetitions and how frequently they have been performing the workouts. Everything is changed for optimal performance and enjoyment. This is achieved through regular interaction on what has worked / needs evaluated in the plan.
There is NO substitute for having a professional manage your training plan. Imaging striding into the gym or limbering up for your cardio and knowing exactly what you need to do? That feeling of confidence breeds results and will help you progress exponentially faster than if you workout alone – I promise you.
