Gym Plans Explained: PHA

  • Key training principles
  • How to make your routine more effective

In this series, RYPT examines important training principles in order to make your routine more efficient, enjoyable and effective.

PHA

If you’re looking for a way to improve your cardiovascular fitness whilst getting stronger then look no further than PHA. Peripheral Heart Action is about maximising the efficiency of the heart whilst lifting weights in the gym.

Simply put, this plan involves merging upper and lower body workouts into one all over body session.

The main thinking behind this is to encourage the blood to flow from upper to lower body and vice versa. This means the heart works harder and lungs forced to keep up hence burning more calories and sculpting the body.

You’ll probably know that when you train one particular muscle group in the gym, unless you work at a high tempo with minimal rest, then generally you won’t sweat as much as cardio sessions. Leg day is the exception to the rule as the legs constitute such a great span of the body’s muscles.

Integrating upper and lower body sessions is a superb way of condensing your workouts and adding an extra dimension. This can either be done with opposing exercises performed immediately back to back (as a superset) or one after the other.

I love challenging workouts and this is definitely a way to get stronger all over and often you will find that training more often legs is a better way to enhance upper body strength too. Therefore they shouldn’t necessarily be trained separately.

It may take some adjustment if you haven’t tried PHA but should you be looking for a new way to enjoy your gym training then it’s definitely recommended.
