I suppose this blog should be pretty one sided but here’s my alternative take on it.

It’s not often I have a story that inspires my blog, normally the other way around!

Anyhow, yesterday i somehow stumbled across a memory which I can laugh about now but was horrendous at the time.

I’ve not had too many bad experiences of Glasgow (football aside obviously!) however this was one of them.

I remember staying in a top floor flat in Glasgow (which was a good location but not the best area). Anyway, after a hectic Monday of training for my PT course (which I was doing then, roughly 8 years ago) I got an almighty surprise.

On returning I found the front door open and nobody in.

After more of a search, I discovered that my laptop, iPod and money were missing. I didn’t know what to think.

After eventually accepting what had happened and trying to make enquiries with neighbours, it was hopeless. I was lucky in a way that I still had most of the other valuable things in the flat or I had them with me.

It took me a while to calm down but I then decided to eat, so I had food in the oven. I don’t know where my head was but I started trying to make further enquires with neighbours…

On return to my flat, what had I done? Locked myself out with my flat mate nowhere nearby.

Now bearing in mind that I had food in the oven that was beginning to burn, you could say the situation was problematic.

In a fit of panic, I found a broom handle that I had taken outside the flat and began trying to feed it through the letter box onto the latch. Essentially I was trying to break into my own flat. It took a good few minutes of failure and bloody knuckles before I finally cracked it. Much to my relief, before I needed the fire brigade too.

What a day that was and one that will live long in my memory.

It’s definitely a tale of how, if you must achieve something, you will find a way. The human body is an amazing mechanism and in times of desperation will resort to extreme measures.

It makes me wonder on a more philosophical level if motivation is something that we are born with or if it’s an acquired discipline.

Each of us have a level of tolerance to exercise: some avoid it, some embrace it and it’s difficult to categorise why.

For me, I’ve always grown up with fitness being paramount in my priorities. Even before I began a career in fitness this was the case. Obviously dealing with a wide demographic in my time as a fitness coach I have learned many things about the mentality of people, their lifestyles and the importance of health.

The sad reality is that health often isn’t a priority until something prompts action. The most common case of this is being told to lose weight.

Modern society is hectic, fast paced and stressful, so much so that we often neglect our health.

In my opinion, it is a case of not having the discipline to prioritise fitness rather than lacking time.

Everybody is busy, everybody needs to sleep, everybody has commitments in their life but if you really want to, you will make time for what is important. Much like the desperation that we, as humans, have the ability to contour up.

If it is a priority, you will find a way, you will find a reason to do it rather than an excuse.

I hate the gym mentality of “excuses don’t burn calories” and “go hard or go home.” However, there is an element of truth in this hardheadedness – you need to commit to yourself.
