How to Have a More Positive Outlook

  • Improve your mindset
  • Training better with small lifestyle changes

Life is certainly different as we deal with the current global pandemic. Ensuring that you maintain your physical and mental health is crucial. Fewer social interactions, vast routine changes, being isolated and life changing as we know it, mean that mental health is more significant. There are some simple things that you can do, which will make a huge difference.

When it comes to mental health, it is inextricably tied to physical health, so keeping active is crucial. When you are active, you release endorphins and allow yourself time to think (free of distractions). I often find that running is a great way for me to keep a positive outlook as it’s very relaxing. Not only can i forget any worries but I can plan ahead and often have inspirational ideas.

As much as I love lifting weights, cardiovascular exercise has a quicker hit on improving my mental outlook but the former creates a more positive body image (in my opinion anyway!)

In addition to this, eating well will supplement a healthy lifestyle. I firmly believe that what you put into your body makes a huge difference. Consuming numerous takeaways or food high in saturated fats / sugars will have an adverse effect on blood sugar levels and result in an energy imbalance.

Eating regularly and foods with a low GI / Glycemic Index (lower in sugar) will ensure that your body is better equipped to regulate it’s energy. Besides this, it will result in fewer issues in the longer run.

On the flip side, drinking too many stimulants like coffee and alcohol can have an adverse affect on your wellbeing. If you are struggling with sleep, this would be the first thing to review.

When it comes to reducing blood pressure and resting heart rate, a good night’s sleep will do wonders for you. As challenging as this can be, having a consistent and technology-free bedtime routine will assist you in this. Whether it’s having a bath or reading a book, winding down before sleeping certainly helps.

Finally, having a routine is essential to generating purpose. This can be as simple as going for a walk at a regular time, training, playing sports etc. This will help you maintain a sense of purpose. I’ve blogged about the Pleasure Purpose Principle before. As humans, we need to balance necessity with enjoyment. Having too much of one is an unhealthy balance and is unsustainable. Pay attention to what is going on in your life and address any issues.
