How to improve your Running

  • Tips for better performance
  • Improve your race times

One thing that has spiked in popularity during lockdown has definitely been outdoor exercise and notably, running. More people are getting out and running the streets.

It's a quick and convenient way to get fit. I found that it was also very addictive and a great method to get tangible results.

Once you delve deeper into it, you find ways to improve and become more efficient.

In order to get faster, it's vital to have an all-round fitness routine. This includes stretching, weight training and other cardiovascular exercise to help.

If you're not stretching, then the fact that running is a repetitive movement means extra fatigue on these muscles.

Weight training, although not bulking up, will ensure your running mechanics are streamlined. A specialised gym plan means you'll accelerate your progress.

Also, incorporating other cardiovascular exercise, especially swimming and spin classes, mean your lung capacity (VO2 Max) will increase substantially.

In addition to these, having a consistent running plan which facilitates rest and longer duration sessions is essential. If you need help with this, RYPT has a full, free running guide from beginner to full marathon. Get in contact to receive it.

Running is about an all encompassing approach. When you improve your fitness, then your running improves. It's true that these do go hand in hand.

Personally, I find that running with music helped with my endurance. In addition, staying hydrated during the run (especially on a hot day is vital) whether it's a hydration back pack or gels.

There are other fundamental things you can do. Having a consistent routine, so you know what time you're going is something that benefitted me.

Notably when you have a busy week, taking a few minutes prior to plan what you'll be doing assists.
