How to Start Running

  • Beginner’s help
  • Achieve your goals

RYPT is all about beginner's fitness and helping you achieve your goals by making things educational and accessible.

As with everything; sustainability, moderation and enjoyment are vital. Ensuring long term success will mean you achieve your goals.

Running was how I got into fitness. After being shocked at my lack of endurance during playing football, I started with a very simple running routine. Progress was mixed but it was enjoyable and I kept pushing myself further.

I found that working in fitness helped substantially, taking classes like spin and also strength work ensured that I was in a position to stay strong and maintain endurance.

Despite running, I was still training in the gym four times a week. I realise for most people this is challenging to find the time but a prioritised plan and a schedule will make this achievable.

Running can be difficult but it’s easy to see the progression. I love being able to see how much I am advancing with every session. Monitoring progress is half the battle and it culminated in me running races and marathons. These were always enjoyable and the social aspect added an extra element especially the crowds in Inverness cheering you over the finish line.

There are numerous methods of training with cardiovascular fitness, sprints, fartlek, endurance, distance, time trials etc all break the monotony. The added advantage was that I was discovering so many new types of music with the hundreds of hours i was out on the road. Strangely, even after 10 years I can still visualise where I was running on some songs!

Regardless of the weather, I never regretted a run. I remember running, illadvisedly, on sheet ice, hail, vertical rain and so many more. It defintiely adds to mental toughness.

Variety is key too, you can't just mindlessly run for a set amount of time. I love the instant hit or tiredness on the sprints or the slow burn or a longer run.

The main problem that most beginner's face is that they do too much too soon. This inevitably ends in injury, being dissuaded from future exercise and quitting. The goal is to increase roughly 5% each time and progress from there. This may seem a low volume but steady increases can be achieved by a consistent training plan. I encountered a handful of injuries in this time and it was always the psychological impact rather than physical that I found difficult. As always, the best way is to have professional guidance.
