Improve your Gym Efficiency

  • Build a better routine
  • Top 3 bits of gym kit

It’s very strange how February becomes a month with fitness being neglected.

Supermarkets have now relegated health products to their usual spots, exercise is no longer the hot topic that it was in January and people begin to accept that resolutions are a distant memory.

It’s tough to get the message across that fitness is a long term investments and not just seasonal. If you want to change your life then you need to really commit to it.

I love keeping on top of fitness trends and the latest ones seem to be these “express” workouts. Doing more in less time is a hot topics. I was looking around the local Waterstone’s bookshop and the theme in non fiction was very much work:life balance (for business books anyway).

I must admit that I did purchase the Brewdog business book (I’ll review that in a later blog).

It really is a transient world that we live in; new technology quickly gets outdated (although not in every case eg Blu Ray). I’m always wondering what the next trend will be.

Today I read an article that Sony had filed a patent for a contact lens that could record video – I suppose that was only a matter of time (and is very futuristic).

I thought I would rate the most useful gym equipment of the last 15 years. There are clearly plenty of options but I do believe that these are the most effective.

1) Kettlebells

Obviously I would advise learning how to use these correctly before picking them up. However, for all round strength, stamina and performance, kettlebells are ideal.

Moving the body on multiple planes if movement whilst stabilising the core is a sure way to get stronger.

Throw in some compound movements (all over body) and you’ll be sweating in no time.

Kettlebells take away the stability of machines and ensure that you are thinking about the exercise too.

Weights can be progressed or regressed according to ability, making them a magnificent all round choice.

The range of exercise is phenomenal and there are over 50 on the RYPT app for personalisation.

2) TRX

Also known as bodyweight suspension training, I normally build this into clients training plan as it is simply the best way for beginners to advance quickly.

Through leveraging bodyweight, exercises can be made tougher or easier simply by changing feet position. Furthermore, there is not the intimidation of lifting heavier, so long as you have correct technique you’ll be able to get a great session.

I even have one for outdoor fitness and also used for home workouts.

Many of my clients progressed from TRX onto complex barbell movements and I attribute that to the power of the TRX.

Through leveraging your weight, you build up confidence in your body’s ability to deal with strain and this increases without lifting a weight. Your body is a powerful tool and bodyweight exercises are tough yet can be adjusted.

Getting the basics right is fundamental to improving your strength, lifting heavier and ultimately shedding fat!

3) Barbell

No magical machine or accessory here unfortunately!

If you’re looking for the most effective way to change shape and build lean muscle, the barbell is the King!

Whether it’s a case of building some muscle or losing weight, when performed correctly, exercises using the Olympic bar / barbell will increase your strength faster than any machine or accessory.

I base all my training around it and it’s an absolute must-have for joining any gym. Sure machines and other kit are great for variety but for making serious changes, nothing will trump the barbell.

Yes, it is daunting at first but the RYPT app has videos and descriptions of each exercise so you know exactly what to do before you even step foot in the gym.

Fitness doesn’t need to be complicated and despite the brand new gizmos and accessories, it’s the ones that stand the test of time that WILL get you results.
