Injuries and Prevention
- How to reduce pain
- Live a healthier life
Injuries are always a nightmare. Inevitably, they come from the most insignificant movement like a sprain or twist but cause major issues.
I was lucky during my running career that I didn't pick up too many injuries and none severe. However, as I get older I appreciate the need to stretch and foam roll more. I understand that foam rolling is painful and not for everyone but if you know what to do it can be very beneficial.
Obviously, the best way to recover from an injury is rest but this is not always practical especially if you work a physical job.
One of the best and quickest ways to recover is to focus on relaxation and particularly breathing. Box breathing is a superb way to relax tense muscles and only takes a few minutes plus can be incorporated as part of your routine. Ideally performed when lying down or before sleeping, start with your hands across your sternum.
Breathe out for four seconds
Hold for four seconds
Breathe in for four seconds
Hold for four seconds
And repeat roughly ten times.
It may seem difficult to believe but this will make a tremendous difference to your stress levels and muscle tenseness.
I would advocate a regular stretching routine too and focus on the basic ones.
If you are training at a high intensity then warming up is crucial, I can't stress that enough. Aches and pains will quickly escalate if you aren't taking time to recover.
An all round training plan is the first way to get results.
