Less is More in Fitness

  • Enjoy your training with shorter sessions
  • Get better results

Do you train intelligently or do you train endlessly? In fitness it’s easy to do the latter and not get results.

I used to fall into the trap that you need to repeat, repeat and repeat to get results when in actual fact, it’s not the case.

Whatever your discipline is: running, cycling, swimming or the gym, training 6 days a week will soon lead to burnout and / or injury. This is particularly true if you don’t have a guided plan or long term strategy and. / or stick to the same type of training.

Delving deeper into the mechanics of a gym plan: if your goal is to gain lean muscle and change your physique then it simply won’t be accomplished by using more than eight repetitions (regardless of the weight used). Longer recovery phases and heavier weights is the shortest way to that goal. Furthermore, a long term periodisation plan which involves a frequent change of training is the best method.

Seeking the guidance of a fitness professional will assist you in reaching your goals faster and it’s something that I wished I had done when I started.

Longer recovery is vital in the gym as in cardiovascular training. The main reason for this is that it allows you to perform at maximum capacity, with an extended rest period before pushing harder on the next set (which is the goal when trying to improve strength or speed).

In terms of an overall outlook, it takes some adjusting to this method of training but it is rewarding.

Lately, my cardiovascular training has revolved around sprints and recovery rather than just long distance running. This has the dual benefit of improving long capacity (much faster) and retaining lean muscle, which is normally sacrificed at the expense of long distance training.

Subject to no health limitations, pushing yourself more, with extended recovery phases means you can train harder and more efficiently therefore making boring and endless training sessions a thing of the past.
