Motivation (and how to find it)
* Effective training tips
* Solutions to apathy
The most important aspect of maintaining a fitness regime is not having access to equipment, being a member of an exclusive gym or having all the time in the world; it’s about one thing: motivation.
Having willpower and finding reserves of energy, when you really cannot be bothered, is central to achieving your fitness goals. As a testament to this, I haven’t yet rejoined my local gym since lockdown and the thought of that in January 2020 would have given me nightmares.
Instead, I have developed a training regime of using fitness equipment that I already had and some dumbbells that I’ve purchased to ensure that I workout seven days a week (to varying intensities).
The one ingredient that has ensured continual progress (even with access to lighter weights) is consistency. However, it fundamentally requires motivation to get that far.
The best tip that I can give you for motivation is to:
Set small targets and review frequently (eg every week)
Don’t be scared to adapt and change your plan if necessary
Avoid the scales (focus on using a tape-measure of bodyfat analysis instead). Scales treat muscle and fat as the same, thus not giving an accurate presentation of shape.
Change your plan regularly. Monotony leads to boredom and kills motivation.
Reward yourself along the way; if my training means an Oreo milkshake afterwards, then so be it. As a disclaimer, I’m not aiming to lose weight with my current training!
I don’t want to provide too many bitesize tips. These ones will be more than sufficient to ensure your initial success. Once the ball is rolling, it’s far easier to keep the momentum going. However, once it stops the energy required to get going again can feel exponentially more.
When you start training, little and often is an approach best tailored to success. Consistency will follow once you have a reliable routine! Always believe in yourself...
