My fitness Plan: March

  • How my training is looking
  • Hints and tips for your training

I realise that it’s been a while since I last posted about my own training. Despite it being an easy blog to compose, it’s not always the best topic to write about. Anyway we are into the second phase of training and it has been almost three months since I rejoined the gym.

True to form, I am changing my plan every three months. This recent phase has progressed from five sets of 10 repetitions (whilst I assessed the weights and reviewed my technique). My goal now is to increase strength, so the repetitions are 6–8 for five sets again. The focus is on resting between sets, allowing for more weight to be lifted. I am under no illusion that this will be a shorter phase because lifting heavier is used more for a benchmark than a sustainable plan.

My own style is still to have 4 gym days a week, one outdoor cardio, one home circuit session and a home abdominal session every week. Therefore, the plan is still fairly intense and I wouldn’t advocate anything as rigorous for my clients.

Obviously I wouldn’t recommend lifting heavier for lower repetitions for the new gym goer or novice. However, once you have corrected your technique and begin to see progress then it can become an invaluable tool. Usually, lower reptitiions would be in the form of a superset (or adding exercise to properly fatigue the muscles).

Personally, I am enjoying having access to heavier weights and being able to lift to fatigue rather than merely endurance-style repetitions of home training. Ultimately, you need to trade off between enjoyment and results, too much of one is not necessarily a good thing!

Having a plan is an essential way to make progress, particularly if you have an overarching system. This would be most applicable for those playing sports, or needing to be in a particular fitness zone for specific times of year.
