Nutrition Explained: Protein

  • Improve your wellness instantly
  • Nutritional concepts examined

I appreciate that getting in getting fit there can be alien concepts and that there are lots of confusing terms and widespread jargon.

If you read my recent blogs you’ll know that I hate gym myths that are perpetuated.

PROTEIN

As opposed to the previous version of this series, protein is perhaps overused by some and underused by others.

First and foremost, it’s essential for the building of lean muscle. Without protein our bodies would lack strength and it would have a major impact on our general wellness

As a guideline, we should be aiming for around 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. If building muscle is your goal then that should be nearer 1.7.

Oh and gulping it all down at once is not the best course of action! The body needs time to digest it therefore snacking along the way is the best way.

RYPT is all about moderation and protein is definitely one of the building blocks when it comes to nutrition.

I have recently discovered rice protein which is as dense in quality (if not more) than the big high street names and also without the cost.

In terms of protein supplementation, I would advise caution. If you have a balanced nutrition plan then there’s probably little need for it, unless you are aiming to build muscle. There’s certainly not a need for most people to consume more than 2–3 scoops per day (for general everyday wellness anyway). It’s crazy how much people invest in protein supplementation and rely on it, despite taking the time to prepare a protein-based meal being far better all-round.

Protein is found in numerous aspects of our nutrition although not all dairy products will agree with our body. That was one of the reasons why I now use rice protein. Nutrition is very much a personal thing for tastes, needs and goals…

RYPT provides tailored Nutritional plans (developed in conjunction with you and for your individual needs).
