Overtraining and Injury
* Successful longevity
* Dealing with setbacks

I don't do patience or rest days, ever. So last week was an eye opening experience for me.
Not for the first time, I heavily sprained my ankle, to the point of borderline broken. I could hardly walk. Yet my mind was telling me to keep training (and to a certain extent, I did).
In fact, after it happened I completed my round of golf and went to work the next day. Very ill-advised, I must add.

However, it did give me some perspective on fitness. One or two things were flagged up by the scan and I know there’s things I need to change.

Having trained every day for over a year, I can appreciate that it’s not sustainable (yes, lockdown made it much easier). Fitness is about balance and consistency. It’s about the long haul and having your body in a condition to look after itself.
My mentality has been crash and burn but it’s counterproductive. Rest is as vital to the process yet incredibly difficult to implement for me as I love training (or at least depend on it for my routine).

Only five days after the incident I was back trying to run again. Yes it felt good but sometimes caution needs to be exercised.
It's important to believe in the bigger picture and know that one setback can allow you a chance to refocus your energy on other aspects of life.

Admittedly, I have been training everyday but at a different capacity / style in order to stay in the routine.
Personally, I can live without fitness. It's part of me, keeps me accountable, mentally focused and is the structure to my day. Without it, I am lost or worse, bored.

The moral of the story is: do what you love but have balance. If you go all out then it creates an unhealthy relationship and decreases your sustainability.
