Running: A beginner’s Guide

Beginning Running

  • Basics for success
  • Become healthier and happier

When it comes to improving your health, there are fewer better starting options than running. Personally, it gave me the confidence to begin competing, training in gyms and ultimately a career in fitness.

I would always advocate taking it slowly to begin with. Do not begin by trying to run a 10K or push yourself beyond your limits. A walking / light jogging routine is more than sufficient. It doesn’t need to be anything organised, just try a few jogs, maybe a couple of moderate intensity sprints and find your fitness level.

If you find that you enjoy the process, then begin to plan routes and incorporate distances. From there you can progress onto increasing the distance by around 5 percent each time. The main concept is to enjoy it. You may even find that, like me, you get into competing and onto marathons but don’t apply pressure. I found that my true enjoyment was in strength and conditioning.

A word of advice, remember to stretch and incorporate rest days. I was too hardheaded when it came to training and made injuries worse. Stretching will also make a huge difference to performance and is worth the investment of time.

When you begin, aim for just 2–3 days per week with ample spacing between sessions. I guarantee you’ll find the training pain decreasing over time.

Finally, ensure that you have the correct gear. Comfortable shoes are a must for any novice runner. You should also ensure they are appropriate for running. One of my worst injuries was from wearing very light soled shoes that offered no protection. Be mindful of your kit and always ask for help when it’s needed.

I have a full beginner to marathon training plan available, which I wrote two years ago. Get in contact now for a free copy!
