RYPT Active: The Case for Circuit Training
- Achieve more with your fitness
- Reasons to start circuits
As a rule of thumb, people generally prefer either weight training or cardiovascular exercise. This normally means that they stay resigned to their chosen discipline.
It's often not until we are forced from our comfort zone that we find what our potential is. If cardiovascular exercise is your forte then chances are that you struggle with heavy resistance training. Likewise if you prefer weights then it's likely that you'll struggle with endurance. It's very difficult to be successful with both because they use two very different energy systems.
The anaerobic energy system is for short bursts of intense exercise meaning that the body can perform at optimal level for a very short frame of time.
The aerobic energy system does what it says on the tin and is designed for longer bouts where endurance is king.
It is also very specific to what you're trying to achieve for example, I wouldn't expect a marathon runner to be lifting heavy too so you do need to be smart and play to your strengths.
The ability to use both of these is pivotal in circuits and is rarely challenged in other aspects of training.
Having done my first circuits class in months this week, I can certainly vouch for the lungs and muscles being fully utilised.
I would say that irrespective of your goals, having circuit training in your arsenal will compliment your goals. You're not going to be lifting heavy weights in a circuit class yet you'll still build strength. This is the holy grail for most people who buy into the myth the "lifting makes you bulky," I've covered this ridiculous idea before (see previous fitness myth blogs)
Another primary advantage is that the body isn't able to adapt to the vast scope of exercises thus tiring and fatiguing the body.
Your metabolism will be boosted for hours and it does feel great. In contrast to your regular routine, it will push you to your boundaries and give you a complete session every time.
It's always a good idea to mix up your training in order to challenge the body. Doing the same routine over and over will not lead to significant changes.
