RYPT Mindset Corner: Relaxation

  • Learning from setbacks / challenges
  • Improve your mind; improve your health

As a new addition to the RYPT online blogging, I have decided that I will be looking at one idea of psychology each week and reviewing how it can help with your fitness.

During many of the RYPT blogs I make reference to psychology on and albeit shallow level.

This week: Relaxation

Notably at this time of year, it can be difficult to keep to a health and fitness regime. However, there should be an element of enjoyment factored in too.

Should you try to maintain your nutritional plan all year round, it becomes a challenge to maintain motivation. Balance is essential in any fitness plan and rest can act as a spur.

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with a rest over the festive season if it acts as stimulus to train even harder. Personally, my working week is compounded by an intense gym routine, so time off normally means relaxation. My last serious break from my gym plan was a good 5 months ago (even I admit that this is too long).

It’s through these prolonged rest phases that you can review and assess. My gym plan had evolved from 12 repetitions to 8 to 6 and then supersets and beyond; it is time for a change and I can assess what has worked and what failed. Most likely I’ll go back into a higher repetition routine with the goal of a 5 repetitions based muscle gain plan.

Similarly, I’ll evaluate my nutrition and see what is not working. I know that some foods are still triggering me and these need to be sorted. On the other hand, I have been eating well through my days off which is not always the case!

It’s about finding what works for you; of you need time to completely rehaul your plan then a couple of minutes each day in the festive season could be an idea.

Not all fitness professionals preach the same message of relaxation but finding the balance is essential; not everyone can be expected to have the same commitment to training as body builders! Busy lives, chaotic work schedules, eating on the go and not sleeping mean that the holidays are often the only time for people to genuinely unwind.

Furthermore, it’s all the more reason why you should be careful when undertaking an exercise regime. A personalised plan is genuinely the only way to see results over the longer term. Starting at 100 miles per hour is not the answer and creates the “crash and burn” mentality.

So change your thinking going into 2018 and try something that is GUARANTEED to work…
