RYPT Mindset Corner: Stuck in a Rut
- The importance of change
- Tips to GUARANTEE fitness success
Mindset is as important as the physical training when it comes to fitness. Not only that but it’s even easier to adapt and make a healthy lifestyle more achievable.
This week: In a Rut
Changes are always challenging because as humans, the comfort of the status quo is lucrative.
On the flip side of the coin, the most rewarding outcomes happen when we try new things. This is particularly prevalent in fitness and health.
From my experience, the number reason why people quit a healthy regime is boredom. This is more specifically because of lack of knowledge to enable a change. After all, doing the same thing time and again is very mentally taxing (not least to find motivation).
The second most common reason is that the new routine is too uncomfortable or alien from that we are used to.
The most important factor here (whether gym, cardio or sports) is PERIODISATION. This means changing the plan on a semi regular basis to enable the best results and adaptations.
If you follow my blogs, you will know that a consistent plan should be changed every six or eight weeks in order to allow the best progress.
Periodisation could be simply switching between strength, endurance, power-lifting or cardiovascular based sessions.
Having an end goal insight (even for a gym routine) is vital in order to provide extra incentive to push further.
Should you be stuck in a rut of following the same routine every single training session, then it will become monotonous and I can guarantee that it will not last longer term.
RYPT is about sustainability moderation and enjoyment for precisely these reasons. Failure to include all three as part of a training program will drastically shorten the shelf-life of it.
As a catalyst, doing too much (and especially of a routine that is monotonous) is counter-productive to the majority of fitness goals.
The body is not a machine and requires time to regenerate and recuperate therefore it is important to be in peak physical condition too.
As you can see, doing too much in a manner which is repetitive is destined to fail for numerous reasons.
Above all, if the body is performing the same routines on a consistent basis over a longer term, there is no incentive for it to change. As humans, seeking comfort is often the most appealing solution. Change will only happen outside your comfort zone and provided that the new routine is well explained, then I guarantee that you will be able to reap the rewards.
The RYPT app is cheaper than you may think, despite providing all the help and support that you would expect from one to one fitness coaching.
