RYPT Mindset Corner: The Origins

  • How to succeed in your fitness goals
  • Beginning positive changes

As a new addition to the RYPT online blogging, I have decided that I will be looking at one idea of psychology each week and reviewing how it can help with your fitness.

This week: Origins / Positive Changes

The thought of change alone can be tough. The dedication required, feeling lost and starting from a basic level of fitness. I know. I’ve been there.

It does seem like the proverbial mountain to climb but let me assure you that the first session is always the most difficult and uncomfortable. At the end of the day if you do want to change it is going to involve some level of being outside your comfort zone but this doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be painful. Try finding something that you enjoy.

Personally, running was my launchpad into fitness, from there it was a case of transferring to the gym and not looking back. It’s hard to believe that it’s around 12 years since I took up fitness seriously and I can honestly say I’ve not looked back. When I started it was because I was ashamed of my fitness level (and partly due to asthma at the time but still that I was appalled).

It’s now at the point that I can’t imagine my life without fitness being a central part. I realise that can seem a million miles away if you’ve not begun your fitness voyage but let me assure you that you get there very quickly.

Music became a sedative for me when I was running and it did numb the discomfort of running but it was never boring: I would change the route or the playlist to ensure that it was enjoyable.

There is only so much that you can think about it before it’s time to take action. Overthinking does result in a lack of action. There is plenty that you could be missing out on. Afterall, exercise is the best anti-depressant and it will get addictive.

Physically, you can feel yourself getting stronger every session and you can see the improvement – which is a brilliant marker of your success.

Furthermore, your immune system becomes strengthened. I can honestly say that despite training in sub-zero temperatures and some intense sessions, I suffer from fewer flu’s and illnesses. This was the case even from the early days.

Mentally, you become a lot more focused on tasks and it will give you greater purpose in other aspects of your life. I genuinely lose count of the amount of ideas that I have about business, planning and everything else that I have when I’m training (particularly running).

Emotionally you can feel your mood lift throughout the session. Regardless of what is on your mind, there is no happiness in the present moment (only by thinking about the future or the past do we incur negative thoughts). Getting focused on your training is a kind of trance-like state (added to by music). I’ve come out of some tough days feeling much better after a training session.

Whatever level of fitness you start from, if you’re not exercising as part of your lifestyle, the question becomes: why not?
