I WILL START TOMORROW
If I had a penny for every time I heard that I would be a very rich man!
Fact of the matter is that "tomorrow" ends up inevitably being the following day and change doesn't happen.
Whether this is nutrition or fitness, the idea of beginning is used almost as an excuse to avoid it.
We all lead busy lives and it's never easy to try to dedicate a couple of hours every week to yourself. On the other hand, failing to commit to your health can have severe health implications further down the line.
Sure, you won't see these things happen immediately but an increase of calories, salt, sugar and fats are accompanied by an increasing waistline. This leads to fatigue, lack of concentration and more poor health choices.
Over the years, it becomes more and more difficult to lose this weight. Hence the logic of waiting is completely irrational as it makes it harder to start besides, biologically it is more difficult to progress.
Ultimately, there is no way to really begin your fitness journey unless you really believe in it. One of the best statements that I have heard about fitness is that "people only change once the prospect of change is less daunting than the pain of the current situation."
This is completely true and underlines that mental and physical health are very much linked.
Changing your lifestyle is a big commitment. However, having health issues or being motivated for a cause is a key influence and will give you that edge.
Most of my clients have started fitness as a reaction to something in their lives: pain, wanting to look healthier, be happier or even just lead a better quality of life. Normally it means they face an uphill task as they have let it get to that point. However, no task is insurmountable and accepting that you need to do something is the first step.
I'm lucky in that my one to one clients have been adaptive and willing to learn. At RYPT I have always focused on rationale and education (not in a strict sense but learning about things as the coaching progresses).
After all, if you're mindlessly following a script you will not be able to renavigate if things go off course.
The moral of the story is: don't keep waiting: take action sooner! Even doing a lesser amount of activity for a longer period of time is better than playing catch-up from square one.
The quest to change your life can be as simple as a ten minute walk every night. Once you get hooked then you'll be wanting to do more rather than being told it's good for you.
