Starting Fitness

  • The best beginner’s advice
  • Enjoy changing your lifestyle

Starting is always the most difficult part. Firstly finding motivation, then overcoming the fear of failing means that many people don't even reach the starting blocks.

There are a couple of things that you can do to improve your chances of success.

When I began my fitness journey, I started at my own pace by taking up running. It was a very basic level but the speed of progression was rapid. It opened many doors to allow to me to feel comfortable in a gym and from there I began weight training and a career in fitness.

.

It's important to enjoy what you do and start slowly. I loved my training and despite some gruelling sessions it was worth it for the end goal.

The proverbial saying: "first step is the most difficult" definitely applies in fitness. Many sessions begin with lethargy but end with feeling energised. Start small and see where it takes you.

In addition, you need to have some purpose an ultimate end goal allows you to gain extra motivation from seeing how far you have come. If you don't have a plan they you are destined to fall short. Even if you're not entirely motivated by one aspect of health, find something else to focus on. Always ditch the scales in favour of either a tapemeasure or body fat readings; these provide a far more accurate depiction of progress.

It's more challenging to get fit in the New Year because everybody is on the bandwagon so you constantly feel like you have pressure to keep up. Just go at your own pace, doing anything is better than nothing (especially when it's a sustainable, long-term routine).

Workouts can have the added advantage of being sociable. Whether it's a new sport, finding a gym / running partner or a friendly competition, these all help keep your fitness levels up past January.

The goal of getting fitter comes with the responsibility of moderation. I'm not advocating a ruthless nutritional plan over Christmas, however looking at the longer term you need to begin to plan for moderation in all aspects to get the best results.

Even when it comes to your training, you should never be doing too much. Remember, rest is important too. Excessive training will lead to injuries in underdeveloped muscles: I learned the hard way.

Whatever your goal is, plan and execute it in a sensible fashion with sustainability, moderation and enjoyment.
