The Accountability Factor

  • Gaining motivation
  • How to succeed when others quit

As we enter month four of the lockdown, it's important to keep things in perspective and maintain a positive mental outlook.

Trying new things, keeping the mind active and regularly exercising are all vital components of mental wellness.

Nutrition can slide some days, not every day will be great and some activities can feel futile but just remember that we are all in this together.

It's getting to the point now where my own workouts are being a variation of a theme. On the other hand, ensuring that you are challenging yourself physically is good for your mental outlook.

If anything, the key takeaway for most people, I think, will be the importance of moderation. It's perfectly fine to enjoy good and drink but overindulgence needs to be counteracted by activity or weight gain ensues.

For me, exercise has been a way of feeling better whether being hungover or a tough day mentally. It really does help.

We all know that this is the case, yet it takes an event (like lockdown) for people to appreciate the true value of it.

Given the almost limitless possibilities available of having so much time, investing it in your body and health is the best thing you can do.

For some, admittedly it won't be appealing and the last thing they would do.

The one aspect of fitness that ensures you succeed is simply: accountability.

Monitoring your progress and constantly reviewing where you are / want to be WILL get you results.

Numbers don't lie and whether it's distance travelled, weight lifted or calories consumed; recording and evaluating is paramount.

There's not a single approach for everyone, for some people it's about seeing progress in sessions, yet other people prefer a tape measure.

Whatever it is, if you don't have a tracker then it's difficult to get going.

Undoubtedly, the best feeling is seeing the progress over the longer term (and others noticing too) but it's the daily exercise that results in this end product.

Just my opinion and something to consider if you're in a fitness rut. Things are constantly changing so don't doubt the one constant factor: yourself.
