When aiming to improve your fitness, there are numerous different aspects to consider. However, one aspect that is particularly significant. By using time effectively, you will not only hit your fitness goals but will help with continued motivation and progression.
This breaks down into two aspects. By having a time-constrained program, for example a 6-week block, you will be able to direct your attention to your training effectively. If you have the same training plan for months on end, it will naturally become boring regardless of how enjoyable it is at start.
A typical periodization plan would involve training either 8 or 12 weeks, noticing the progress and then changing it again. This ensures that the body constantly adapts and is challenged.
Progress with your fitness will ensure that you are faster, stronger and have more stamina over time. Particularly in the arena of strength training, after two or three months progress will slow down and changing the stimulus on the muscle is a great way to avoid a plateau.
Time can also be used effectively within a training plan. For example, performing an exercise for a set amount of time will mean that you can fatigue the muscle with less weight. This is something that I have learned during lockdown (with only having home workouts).
This could either be part of circuit training or on the back of another exercise, which really does increase the intensity of the workout in a set time.
Most importantly, you should notice progress with your training. Having a time-constrained block will mean that you can review and adapt your training more frequently.
Especially in these challenging times, it is important to be creative with the resources that you have. It is not looking like leisure facilities will be open anytime soon, so improvising and overcoming becomes paramount.
