Too Late to Change?
- How to finally make changes
- Adapting to a new lifestyle
The first step is always the most difficult…
This is particularly true in fitness where often, people new to working out are already very conscious. Beginning is daunting and can be extremely difficult. If you don't make the right choices, it can indeed put you off for life.
By specialising in beginner's fitness, I'm well aware of the challenge it is to get started up. I also know that it is an opportunity to make the largest amount of progress (if done correctly).
It's a well worn clique about fitness in January and resolutions but if you're serious about changing your life then there are other things to consider.
Most importantly, you should realise that workouts / the gym are designed for everyone, not just younger people.
The danger in going in it alone is that you stick to your comfort zone and don't push your limitations. Gym equipment doesn't need to be daunting but you should have a solid understanding of the main technique elements.
The best advice for changing your body is to incorporate weight training and cardio. The good news is that cardio is easy to start (like cycling, running or swimming) however the motivation can be lost quickly.
Weight training is ideal for a small class-based environment if you have the opportunity. Feeling the correct movement will assist in muscle memory and significant body changes in a short space of time. You can get results by performing a small amount of exercises but these can be added to over time.
Nutritionally, things are similar; smaller changes over time and following a professionally approved plan will get results.
There are so many changes that you can make like drinking more water, eating more vegetables and so on. These are simple but require commitment. If you're unsure about goal setting then see last week's free RYPT blog.
The most important thing is that these goals are realistic.
If you can commit to smaller actions on a regular basis then you're half way there. Having motivation is vital but unlike most people in January, the lack of planning and rest leads to burning out and disappointment. Be sensible and take the smaller, more guided steps for better results. It's significantly more beneficial to still be in an exercise routine months down the line rather than crashing and burning.
