Top Three Mistakes (Starting Fitness)
- Avoid these for better results
- Easy alterations to fix mistakes
Common mistakes: STARTING FITNESS
1) GOING FULL-ON
When starting something new, there is often a tendency to go full on. In fitness, your first session can have a polarising effect; either love it or hate it.
For those who embrace it, there is a risk of trying to do too much and setting the bar too high, literally.
Whenever I begin a new client, it’s vital to set the path of sustainable fitness. I love planning sessions and ensuring that these goals are realistic.
Beginning with the goal of five gym sessions a week will quickly fade, trust me. At the end of the day, fitness should be built into your routine and compliment your lifestyle.
Be sensible with goal setting: even if that means one gym session a week. You can build it up but it’s harder scale (without quitting) it back if you start too fast.
2) GIMMICKS
Fitness is not difficult: eating well and. basic exercises on a fairly regular basis over time and you’ll achieve!
It doesn’t take a massive budget to change your life (although eating healthy can be more expensive).
Simply put; more exercise, a managed nutritional plan and healthy lifestyle will get you results.
Exercises don’t need to be complicated, you don’t need gadgets or gizmos and the best investment is time. Dietary supplements and extras are NOT essential to changing your lifestyle but a positive attitude is.
Gym memberships may seem expensive up front, however when put into context it is an invaluable investment in YOU.
I would always advise some professional guidance. especially when lifting weights or using new kit.
3) FLYING SOLO
Working out alone can hamper your progress and doesn’t particularly inspire most people when you’re new to the fitness world.
Having a gym partner will give you added motivation, accountability and support. The gym can be a traumatising place if you’ve never been to one before, therefore having moral support will negate that particular fear.
On a results level, you’ll be far less likely to back out of a workout if someone else is waiting for you than if you train alone.
Furthermore, there is the reassurance that you’re doing things right when you’re training if you pick the right partner.
Finally, it is more fun to have friend with you in the gym. Although over time, you may prefer the peace and quiet when you have a disciplined routine!
