When's the best time of day to train?

  • Different ideas for success
  • Morning, lunchtime or evening?

There has always been a big discussion as to what is the optimal time of day to train physically? Personally, I can see the advantages to each particular time of day.

The idea has long been held that morning workouts are the gold standard. Getting your training done early and waking yourself up simultaneously.

On the other hand, science has often said that our bodies don't reach optimal temperature until the middle of the morning. I do believe that this is true as I often found going for gym sessions, in particular, yielded best results around this time. My main issue with morning training is ensuring that my clients have enough food inside them prior to training and oftentimes, eating in the morning is a big issue. However, failure to eat can result in lightheadedness and fatigue.

I appreciate that not everybody has been in the fortunate position of being self employed and able to select gym times. Currently being in full time employment, straight from work (around 5:30) is my preferred time to train, just before the evening rush.

In an ideal world, I would have my evenings free having trained in the morning. However, unless it's going for a run, it isn't feasible for me to do this.

Evening workouts do however, mean that I'm able to stock up on nutrition and feel properly warmed up.

These are only my thoughts and you do need to find what works best for yourself. I always encourage my clients to create a consistent routine and this is more important than when you train.

Schedules can be adapted but getting training sessions into your routine us ultimately what gets you results. Along the way you do need to make sacrifices in order to commit to a fitness regime but it is undeniably worth the effort.
